The Golden Age of Late Chosŏn and Politically Isolated Literati

: Focusing on Yi Ok (1760-1815)

Among hundreds of stories produced in late Chosŏn, more than 90% of the stories are anonymous, which made contemporary scholars difficult to examine how and by whom Korean fiction was formed and developed. Previous studies attribute the development of fiction from commoners, while assuming that a few literati contributed to its creation and circulation as well. Still, not many case studies support this assumption because the literati chose not to reveal their names in their works of fiction which were regarded as miscellaneous. In this context, this presentation examines the role of politically marginalized writers who were participants in the development of fiction but whose contribution has largely been undervalued due to their political insignificance. In this context, my presentation focuses on Yi Ok (17601815), whose writings violated Neo-Confucian literary norms, even compelling King Chŏngjo (r. 17761800) to establish a policy, Munch’e panjŏng 文體反正 (Return to Ancient-Style Prose), prohibiting the Chosŏn literati from writing in Yi’s style. Yi Ok was an iconoclast who argued that socially subversive themes and immoral characters make Korean literature unique and worth reading. In examining Yi’s stories, such as those about morally defeated members of the literati and artists, as well as ghosts and female shamans, my study reveals that morally unhealthy characters and theme of secular desires were popular among literati writers of the late Chosŏn. Yi''s stories map the existence of a much more expansive characterization of the Chosŏn literati culture.
