The turn of the seventeenth century witnessed the synchronous rise of two poets on the Chinese book market, the medieval poet Li He (790–816) and the near contemporary Choson Korean female poet Hŏ Nansŏrhŏn (1563–1589). This essay reevaluates the role of the two poets in the construction of a gendered aesthetics in the first high tide of women’s poetry in China.

As a historical construct, Nansŏrhŏn suggested to the Chinese women poets what a woman poet could do with the heritage of Li He to meet the demands of a gendered poetics in early seventeenth-century China. For this reason, she was appreciated, endorsed, and published. The inquiries into the forging of her connections to Li He on the Chinese book market, therefore, would provide us an opportunity to glimpse into a moment of the formative stage of the seventeenth-century ideological exaltation of women poets.

We begin with observing Nansŏrhŏn’s poetry migrating from one local context free of concerns of gendered poetics (i.e., her native soil) to another that was deeply troubled by the question of women (i.e. China). Then in the field of poetry criticism, we find that her poetry generated among Chinese poets a mixture of enthusiastic praises and hostile comments, because of the tension between two disparate ideals of “women’s poetry” centered around the question of whether it should have its own distinct style. At the core of the Nansŏrhŏn phenomenon, I argue, was the eternal impulse to say something in a gendered way, to shrug off the tyranny of High Tang masters’ models and norms.
