이번 컬로퀴엄에서는 현재 규장각한국학연구원에 펠로로 와 계신 이향아 선생님께서 "공동묘지와 식민지 서울의 공간 생산, 1910-1945 (Public cemeteries and the production of urban space in colonial Seoul, 1910-1945)"라는 제목으로 발표해주실 예정입니다.

이향아 선생님은 도시사회학과 역사사회학, 도시사 및 도시연구를 주로 연구하시는 학자로, 영국의 런던정치경제대학과 캠브리지대학에서 사회학 석사학위를, 캠브리지대학에서 박사학위를 받으셨습니다. 박사학위 논문 제목은 ‘Public cemeteries and the production of urban space in colonial Seoul, 1910-1945’로 이번 콜로퀴엄의 발표와 같습니다. 이향아 선생님은『강남만들기, 강남따라하기』, 『세계의 지속가능 도시재생』, 『2018년 서울생활문화조사 자료조사: 반포본동』 등의 공저자이시고,「Managing the living through the dead: the colonial governmentality and the 1912 burial rules」 (The Journal of Historical Sociology) 등 논문을 출간하신 바 있습니다.

1912년 조선총독부는 ‘묘지, 화장장, 매장 및 화장 취체규칙(이하 묘지규칙)’을 발포한다. 묘지규칙은 조선인의 매장풍습에 대한 근대적 규제로 알려져 있다. 그러나 본 연구는 묘지규칙이 매장풍습에 대한 규제를 넘어 식민지 조선의 수도였던 경성의 공간을 탄생시키고 생산해낸 공간적 규율이었음을 밝힌다.

이 연구는 묘지라는 죽은자의 공간을 통해 식민지 서울이라는 산자의 공간이 어떠한 방식으로 형성되어 갔는지 고찰하기 위해, 제도·물리적 공간·주체의식/경험이라는 세 주제를 엮은 ‘제도적 정치경제학’이라는 분석틀을 적용한다. 이를 통해 (공동)묘지는 어떻게 조선인의 매장 제도를 변화시켜갔는지, 서울이라는 공간의 물리적 경관은 어떻게 전환되었는지, 주체들의 경험과 인식은 어떻게 분절되고 재현되었는지 살펴보고자 한다.

The Government-General Korea announced the burial rule in 1912, which was known to control Koreans’ burial customs. However, this research reveals that the bural rule was a very spatial strategy to create the (re)form the urban space of colonial Seoul.

The research applies the analytic framework called ‘institutional political economy’ to understand to the triad dialectics of the institutions, spatial change and the consciousness and the experience of subjects to produce the urban space. In this context, this research looks at to what extent did the (public) cemetery influence the institutional change of burial system, to what extent was the physical landscape of urban Seoul transformed and how was the experiences and consciousness of subjects fragmented and represented.
